DIY Sunburst Mirror from Paint Sticks

I love mirrors and new ways to use "junk" (like the paint sticks)! So when I found all the unique  sunburst mirror craft ideas to do at home on Pinterest I knew I needed to make my own to turn paint sticks  and mirror from junk to treasure. Here is how I did it.

Step 1: Gather Supplies

  • Mirror,  I used an 8 inch (I forgot to include it in my picture, sorry!)
  • Paint sticks.  I needed 32 but you may need more or less depending on the size of your mirror.
  • Spray Paint of desired color
  • Hot glue gun
  • Cardboard
  • Box cutter (if needed)
  • Wire
Step 2: Spray paint the paint sticks

Step 3: Hot glue layers of paint sticks on the back of the mirror
I used the bottom of the curved handle as measuring piece to make sure all my sticks were about the same length.  Make sure to use lots of glue on each piece so that it will stick together.  Then press and hold for a few seconds to make sure the glue dries before going on to the next one.  (Excuse my toes in the picture),

Step 4: Cut a small piece of cardboard

Step 5: Wrap wire on the back of cardboard then hot glue to the paint sticks/mirror.

End Result
I think this sunburst mirror turned out great! It was an easy project to make, fast (it only took a few hours), and cheap!
Tips to make this project cheaper:
  1. While I was trying to collect paint sticks I found out some places try to charge you for them or they will only allow you to get 2-3.  So either collect a few each time you go to the store or find a store that will allow you to get a lot at a time.  I got lucky when I went to Lowes.  As I was talking to the worker and showing me what I was making he graciously gave me a whole box! (Thanks Lowes!)  It was more than enough for this project and for many more projects to come (check back for more uses of paint sticks).  Maybe you can get lucky too.
  2. Try to find a mirror at a garage sale, thrift store or buy it at Hobby Lobby when on sale or use their 40% coupon.
  3. Use spray paint you already have.
  4. Use scrap cardboard from boxes you already have or ask your local stores for boxes they have from inventory.
  5. If you don't have wire you can use rope or other strong string.
I would love to hear any comments, tips, or pictures of your results from this tutorial!
