DIY EAT Cardboard Letter Art for Under $1

I have had the wall space above my sink in my kitchen empty for months.  It has been waiting for something unique to be hung there.  After searching Pinterest for various do it yourself kitchen wall art ideas, not really finding anything I was in love with I decided to make my own cheap craft using repurpose cardboard and yarn to create an "EAT" sign.

Step 1:
Gather supplies
  • Cardboard
  • Box Cutter
  • Measuring Tape
  • Yarn
 Step 2:

Cut out letters,  I did not have stencils as big as I wanted my letters so I just used a measuring tape to make them the same size.  I made each of my letters 8 1/2 inches wide and about 12 inches long.

Step 3:

Wrap the letters in yarn. This was the hardest part for me (it should be the easiest right?).  At the beginning I was trying to make the yarn wrap in 2 different directions which is much more complicated then it sounds on these letters.  Once I gave up and did wrapped the yarn in the same way, its MUCH easier and still looks good.  To start I just tied a knot at one end of the letter and kept wrapping until I reached the end.  Then I tucked the ends under the cardboard so I wouldn't see them.

The End Result

This is how it looks hung up above my sink.  I don't know if its going to stay in the place but it fills the space and is very unique.

Tips to Save Money on This Project:
1. If you do not have cardboard on hand ask your local stores.  My husband's workplace has TONS of cardboard they usually recycle or throw away because that is what their inventory comes in.  If you ask ahead of time they are often happy to give some to their customers.
2.  This project doesn't require soft yarn so choose the cheapest one if you do not have any on hand. I think I spent $1 on the yarn I used for this project at Walmart and has lasted me forever.

I would love to hear any comments, suggestions, or expertise from you!
